This week we ventured to the lovely town of Rawtenstall in the picturesque Rossendale Valley. Well worth the visit if you love a shopping day peeps. The area is a fabulous place to visit with a stunning Museum/Gallery ‘The Whitaker’, lots cafe’s, bars, boutiques and independent shops, it is also the home of Britain’s last Temperance bar ‘Mr Fitzpatricks‘.
Only 17 miles from Manchester, this charming town should be on your to do list.
Now Sharkey and Duff love an independent boutique, an enthusiastic owner who is passionate about the stock and the business is a far more attractive shopping prospect to us than some of the high street brands.
We find the fabulous Nu-Shu on the main street of Rawtenstall, ‘BANK STREET’. We are given a warm welcome and free reign of the shop by the lovely Cora and her trusty sidekick the adorable Nu-Shu mascot ‘BOWIE’. Nu-Shu is a treasure trove of beautiful footwear and on trend fashion finds. Stocking brands such Marco Tozzi, Steve Madden, Bridas, Grace and Mila, Moda In Pelle and Q\A there really is something for everyone and every occasion.
Cora Corbridge the proud owner started the venture 8 years ago. After having a career in sales Cora decided she wanted to use her skills and set up on her, own doing something she loved. ” A shop came up for Rent in Rawtenstall and within 4 weeks I’d left my job and signed the lease! Most people thought I was crazy but I knew that with hard work and dedication it would be a success. My aim was to cater for women who wanted quality fashion without paying the earth. the market was saturated with either high-end shops but nothing in between”.
After a couple of years of trading Cora decide to expand the business when the shop she is now located in on Bank street became available. Again she took a chance and has never looked back.
Cora attributes some of her success to her right hand woman Suzanne Connolly. “I’ve been lucky having Suzanne working for me, she treats the shops like her own. We both travel to Milan, Spain and London in the search for the right brands and styles.”
Once the Rawtenstall branch was established, Cora set her eye on the chocolate box village of Whalley in the Stunning Ribble Valley. Eventually a shop became available and in her usual style, Cora bit the bullet and went for it! Cora’s gut instinct was right again, as the Whalley shop has now been open for two years and has built up a loyal customer base .
Cora states ” We try to keep different stock in both shops to attract customers to both which works well. the business has gone from strength to strength over the 8 years of trading. don’t get me wrong there are very stressful times but I’m very lucky in having such a loyal and dedicated employees and a very good repeat customer base.”
Sharkey and Duff spent a happy hour or so perusing the shelves and rails. We will defiantly be coming back to NU-SHU for all our favourite picks (see below).
SHARKEY AND DUFFS FAVOURITE PICKS
Now we have to set ourselves a rule before we go on these hunts for you and that’s the no shopping rule. You see, we often love the same thing and can end up rugby tackling each other out-of-the-way, over a shiny pair of shoes or a sequin top ( we are both total Magpies). So whilst doing an edit, we try to act both professional and dignified something we are not famous for ha ha.
Below are our favourite picks that we will go back to scrap over and purchase. We will allow ourselves, now that we have done our job. We just pity poor Cora, when she has to play referee.
Sharkey headed straight for a lovely relaxed style Kaffe short Playsuit in khaki and a soft cotton denim off the shoulder sundress. Sharkey loves a playsuit for her hols and would wear it with a wedge sandal or an ankle boot for easy casual styling. I headed for the fabulous soft hang Kaffe navy trouser suit( I lurve a trouser suit) I would style this with a plain white t and sneaks or a pair of heels and a cami to dress it up a little. We are both partial to a sneaker Sharkey was drawn to the Alpe platform star pumps in silver whilst I fell for the Khrio leather star design. Another find was a pair of Jimmy Choo inspired rose gold heeled sandals, Sharkey spied these to go with a dress she already had but hadn’t been able to find shoes to match so total winner.
The fabulous white T-shirt with the neon pink and pineapple design was a winner with both of us, as were the so soft Luella star knit cashmere jumpers. Stars are everywhere this season and these are perfect for weekend styling with your favourite jeans. Luckily Sharkey can’t wear a high neck as it makes her feel claustrophobic so the beautiful delicate polka dot blouse with frill sleeves has my name on it, we both loved the Kaffe cold shoulder shirts but I plumped for the white and Sharkey for the pale blue ( fight avoided)
We will also have to plan our holiday outfits too as we both spied the cutest gold Steve Madden bow slider sandals that would look divine with a tan, an unreal over sized bag by Marco Tozzi and a metallic bag of dreams that will look fab with both our sneaks, or to give a bit of bling to the plainest of outfits! What can we say about the Q\A glasses apart from the fact that we want every pair and can’t believe how fabulous they really are and at a steal of a price (fight defiantly not avoided).
Give the girls a visit soon you lovely lot, and please let us know if you purchase any of our top picks.
Lots of love Sharkey & Duff Xxx
